The IGA Amateur squad captured the Iowa Cup Matches for the third year in a row. After trailing 8-2 following the first round Four-Ball Matches, the amateurs prevailed 7-3 in Foursomes to cut the lead heading into the final day of Singles Matches. The amateurs kept the momentum going with an 12 to 8 advantage on the final day, to bring the final total to 21 to 19. After a string of lopsided results, the final two years have been quite close. The amateurs won the cup last year by a score of 21 1/2 to 19 1/2.
Ames Golf and Country Club was the host site and the players dealt with firm, fast and windy conditions both days. Stopping the ball on the greens proved difficult as many players adjusted to play more bump-and-run approaches. Gary Thompson of Ames and J.D. Turner, originally of Spencer, were the honorary captains of the IGA and Iowa PGA sides, respectively.
