For the first time ever, the Iowa Junior Amateur and the IWGA Junior Girl’s Championships were held concurrently. Nearly 140 boys and girls descended onto Lake Panorama National Golf Course in Panora to compete in the various age divisions.
On day one, a severe storm stopped play for three hours but play resumed with the course only suffering a few areas of standing water from the substantial rain fall. The 11 & under Boys and Girls were lucky enough to finish their 9-hole rounds early in the morning without delay. The two girl contenders for the 11 & under division set the pace for the boys that followed. Annika Patton won the title with a round of 63 and Britta Snyder finished as runner-up a 71. Nick Pittman won the championship spot for the boys with a round of 38. Not far behind was the runner-up, Will Babcock, who shot 42.
The 12-13 Boys began their 18 holes after the rain delay but the wet conditions did not hinder the competition. The top four players were separated by a single stroke. The champion was Tripp Kinney, who shot a 78, followed by Caleb Peters and Adam Heater who scored 79 and 80, respectively. The 12-13 Girls had the latest tee times of the day on top of the rain delay. Not wanting to quit, they fought into the darkness to finish their 18 holes. Lexie Patton walked away champion with her score of 92. Runner-up Taylor Nesselroad was the second place finisher with a round of 97.
Age Divisions 14 to 15 and 16 to 18 was contested over 36 holes and unlike the delays and wetness of Round 1, Round 2 was pleasant and dry. This change in condition was reflected in the scores with most of the 14-18 boys and girls showing improvement from Round 1. The top two finishers for 14-15 Boys, Carson Whittington and Alexander Moorman, both cut their Round 1 scores by three strokes that led them to final scores of 147 and 149, respectively. Megan Joerger won the first spot for 14-15 Girls with a total score of 172 while runner-up, Paige VanDyk finished with 176.
Jessie Sindlinger, champion of the 16-18 Girls, finished with a final round 74 to shoot 154 total and win by ten strokes over runner-up, Susan Kirschenman. The Boys 16-18 division ended in an exciting play-off between Kee-Socrates Fryxell and Timothy Taylor who ended their rounds tied at a total of 149. Taylor won the championship with a great par save from the greenside bunker on #2, their second playoff hole, after each player was forced to punch out from tree trouble in the fairway.
