Nate McCoy wins Iowa Masters
Cody Schweinefus shoots final round 64 to finish runner-up
Nate McCoy accomplished something on Sunday his father, decorated amateur Mike McCoy, still has yet to. Nate shot an 8-under par 208 to win the 2011 Iowa Masters Tournament at Veenker Memorial Golf Course in Ames, a victory that has eluded his dad.
The win did not come easy for the Iowa State golfer. After leaving the 17th green McCoy thought he had a two shot lead over fellow competitor Michael Wuertz until someone pointed out that Cody Schweinefus had just turned in a tournament record tying 8-under 64 to finish at 7-under for the championship. McCoy was 7-under for the championship himself walking to the final teeing ground.
After hitting a long iron second shot into the rough just right of the flagstick on the final par-5 hole, McCoy hit a soft chip shot that settled three feet beyond the hole. He calmly converted the short birdie putt to win the first Iowa Masters for the McCoy family.
Bill Manske won the Senior Division after shooting a final round 71 to finish at 3-under par 213, good enough for a three shot victory over Jim Curell. Manske has been eligible for play in the Senior Division for four years and has now won three times. The only time he didn't finish on top was 2009 when he lost in a playoff to Jim Butler.
