Iowa continues trend, wins Director's Cup

The Iowa team captured 14 points in final day singles matches to continue the trend of home team victory at the Tri-State Director's Cup Matches. The Director's Cup has now been held six times, with each state hosting twice and winning twice. The 2011 edition proved to be the overall closest competition in the event's history with each team finishing within two points of each other. Iowa came out on top with 26 while Kansas had 24 and Nebraska 22.
Glen Oaks Country Club in West Des Moines proved to be the home course advantage as strong back nine in Tuesday's singles play propelled the Iowa squad to victory. Seven of the eight Iowa golfers won the back 9 point in singles, and that proved to be the difference.
On Monday the Iowa team came back after posting only 2 1/2 points in the morning four-ball matches to win 9 1/2 in the afternoon foursomes and finish with 12 for day one. Kansas used a strong morning session of 8 1/2 points combined with 5 points in the afternoon to finish day one in the lead with 13 1/2 points. Nebraska posted a strong morning session as well with 7 points in the four-ball while slipping a bit in the afternoon with only 3 1/2 points. They were in third with 10 1/2 points for the day.
The matches are held on the year opposite the USGA Men's State Team Championship. Iowa will be looking to keep the trend going as the home team has won all five times thus far.
Each state fields a team of eight golfers to compete in Four-Ball, Foursomes and Singles matches. Monday will consist of Four-Ball matches in the morning and Foursomes in the afternoon. Tuesday will conclude play with Singles matches. All matches are played with a Nassau scoring format, 1 point is available for the front 9, 1 point for the back 9 and 1 point for the total.
