Vandersee, Bullington headed to Cherry Hills

Ian Vandersee (L) and Brian Bullington earned a spot into the U.S. Amateur
The Hawkeyes ruled their home course during qualifying for the U.S. Amateur Championship. University of Iowa golfers Ian Vandersee of West Des Moines and Brian Bullington of Frankfort, IL took home the two qualifying spots at Finkbine Golf Course in Iowa City and earned a spot into the U.S. Amateur.
A third Hawkeye golfer, Steven Ihm of Peosta, defeated Tanner Kesterson of Plano, TX on the first playoff hole to earn 1st Alternate status.
Vandersee & Ihm played together during the 36-hole qualifier and, after steady first rounds, went to work in round two. Vandersee pointed out at the scorer’s table when posting his first round 70 that he had never broken 70 at Finkbine. Now he has. The sophomore-to-be caught fire and put up eight birdies against a single bogey to post a 7-under 65, easily claiming medalist honors.
Ihm, after a bit of fireworks with a hole-in-one on the 4th hole during the first 18, nearly matched Vandersee with seven birdies during his second round 67. Meanwhile Bullington simply played steady golf the entire day. He opened with a 70 and closed with a 69 making only three missteps the entire day.
Vandersee and Bullington will now travel to Cherry Hills in Denver where they will face 36 holes of stroke play qualifying August 13th & 14th to try and match the 64-person match play draw.
