Schnell Tops Schall at U.S. Senior Open Qualifier

Two of  Iowa’s best Club Professionals got their first shot at the U. S. Senior Open and ended up in a playoff for the only qualifying spot at Lake Panorama National Golf Course on June 22nd  .  Curt Schnell of Milford and Ken Schall of Clive both fired one-under-par 71 but Schnell rolled in a 10 foot putt for birdie on the first playoff hole to earn his way to the National Senior Open.  Upon finishing their rounds both players felt that 71 would not be good enough but the rain soaked golf course played very tough.  So, the two 50-year-old “rookies” had to play one more hole in the extreme 95 degree heat to decide who would advance.

The low amateur medal and second alternate position went to Fred Marvelli of Norwalk, who finished one shot back at even-par 72.  The 2009 U. S. Senior Open will be played July 30 – August 2 at Crooked Stick Golf Club in Carmel, Ind.
