Iowans fail to advance at Q-School

Jack Newman, Chris Baker and Derek Bohlen all came up short during the second stage of PGA Tour Qualifying School last week. Newman and Bohlen participated in second stage at the TPC Craig Ranch while Baker went to Hombre Golf Club's Bad/Ugly Course.

Baker came the closest to advancing, finishing in a tie for 29th with rounds of 71-71-74-72 to finish at 4-over 288. The top 21 and ties advanced to the final stage. Newman posted a T58 finish after 74-71-76-70 left him at 3-over 291 at Craig Ranch, while Bohlen was T75 with a 69-73-79-77--298.

Iowans also came up short at the Final Stage of Champions Tour Q-school. Lonnie Nielsen and Dave Rummells each failed to claim one of the five exempt spots available at the TPC Scottsdale Champions Course. Nielsen finished in a tie for 55th with a four round 1-over 285 while Rummells finished tied for 67th at 5-over 289.

Newman, Baker advance to second stage

Multiple players with ties to Iowa participated in the First Stage of PGA Tour Qualifying School recently.  Three players, Jack Newman, Derek Bohlen and Chris Baker, advanced to the second stage.

Newman is a graduate of Hoover High School in Des Moines, starred for Michigan State and won the 2008 U.S. Amateur Public Links which earned him a spot in the 2009 Masters Tournament.  Bohlen is from Waterloo and played collegiately at Northern Iowa. Baker, originally from Indiana, played collegiately at Iowa State before joining the professional ranks.  He posted a top five finish at the Nationwide Tour’s Mexico Open in June.

Newman advanced through the first stage at Pinewild Country Club in Pinehurst, North Carolina.  The Des Moines native posted rounds of 71-75-72-72 to finish at 2-over 290 and a tie for 18th.  The top 22 and ties advanced through the Pinehurst qualifier.  Bohlen played his first stage qualifying at Oak Valley Golf Club in Beaumont, California where he posted rounds of 72-69-76-69 to claim one of the 23 spots into second stage. Baker participated at St. Johns Golf & Country Club in St. Augustine, Florida where he posted rounds of 68-66-74-69 to finish at 11-under and a tie for 17th.  Just like at Pinehurst, the top 22 and ties advanced through St. Augustine.

Newman and Bohlen will participate in the Second Stage at TPC Craig Ranch in McKinney, Texas from November 15th-18th.  Baker goes to Hombre Golf Club’s Bad/Ugly course in Panama City Beach, Florida from November 16th-19th.  If either should advance, the Final Stage is six rounds from November 30th thru December 5th at PGA West in LaQuinta, California.

Four others with ties to Iowa were unsuccessful in their bid to advance through First Stage.  Chad Proehl, teaching professional at Sugar Creek GC in Waukee, and Vince India, recent Iowa Hawkeye golfer, came up short at PGA Golf Club’s Wanamker Course in Port St. Lucie, Florida.  Proehl played solidly to finish four rounds at 5-under and miss advancing by a single stroke.  India was never able to gather momentum and finished at 7-over 295, well back of the number.

Also trying his hand at the Pinehurst qualifier was another recently graduated Hawkeye, Brad Hopfinger.  Hopfinger was ultimately undone by his third round 6-over 78 and finished at 9-over and a tie for 35th.  And finally, Brady Schnell of Milford, Iowa who played his college golf at Nebraska finished in a tie for 27th at Deerwood Golf Club in Kingwood, Texas after firing a four-round 6-over 294.  He missed advancing by two strokes.

Champions Tour Q-School

Lonnie Nielsen and Dave Rummells have advanced to the final stage of qualifying for the 2012 Champions Tour. Nielsen was inducted into the Iowa Golf Hall of Fame in 2010. Nielsen is a native of Belle Plaine and has won twice on the Champions Tour. Rummells is from Cedar Rapids and includes two victories on the Nationwide Tour amongst his accomplishments. Both Nielsen and Rummells played their college golf at the University of Iowa.
