Kern advances to U.S. Amateur Public Links

Ben Kern overcame thirty mile per hour winds and a heat index of 102 degrees to become the second straight resident of Algona to qualify for the USGA Amateur Public Links Championship by winning the Iowa sectional qualifier. Ben shot rounds of 69 and 74 to lead the 20-man field and win the qualifying medal by three strokes. Matthew Jennings of Prairie City shot 146 to take the first alternate position and Michael Slavin of Johnston and Tyler Smith of Des Moines tied for third with a 36 hole total of 149.

Ben now joins 155 other public course players at Soldier Run Golf Course in Midway, Utah the week of July 9-14 to compete for the USGA Amateur Public Links championship. In Utah, Ben will have two days of qualifying to try to make the field of 64 for match play.
