July 24, 2006

Luke Miller of Clive and J.D. Anderson of West Des Moines tied for the top spot at the U.S. Amateur Qualifier held at Sunnyside Country Club in Waterloo.  Miller opened with a 69 and followed with a 71 in the afternoon round to finish at 4-under 140 while Anderson carded back-to-back 70's to arrive at the number.  Missouri golfer John Kelly claimed the final qualifying spot when he posted an afternoon round of 69.  That score combined with his morning score of 72 put Kelly at 3-under 141, one shot clear of four golfers at 2-under 142.

The trio advances to the United States Amateur Championship August 21-27 at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, MN.  At the U.S. Am the players will face 36 holes of stroke play qualifying with the low 64 players making it to match play.

Nate Dunn of Cedar Rapids prevailed over three others in a playoff to determine the alternate positions.  Dunn birdied the second playoff hole to claim the first alternate spot while Jon Feldick of Coralville made par to claim the second alternate. Gene Elliott of West Des Moines bogeyed the first playoff hole to fall out of the playoff while Andrew Wyatt of Lake Forest, IL bogeyed the second hole.
