Iowans Fall Short at U.S. Open Sectionals
Columbus, Chicago, St. Louis Qualifiers Not Kind to Iowa Golfers

June 7, 2006

All six golfers from Iowa who were competing in U.S. Open Sectional Qualifying came up short in their bid for Winged Foot and the U.S. Open Championship.

Amateur Mike Oimoen of Clear Lake, shot a 79-73--152 at Fox Run Golf Club to miss out on the two qualifying spots available.  The two spots were claimed by Travis Hurst of Erie, KS and Jay Delsing of St. Louis.  Oimoen is currently a member of the Indian Hills CC golf team in Ottumwa.

Amateurs Gene Elliott and Jack Newman and professionals Jerry Smith and John Bermel all participated in the qualifier held in the Chicago area at the St. Charles Country Club.  Thirty golfers (30) teed off Monday morning for the 36-hole qualifier with only two spots available to move on to Winged Foot Golf Club and the U.S. Open Championship.  Tour professional Steve Stricker was the medalist at the qualifier after firing rounds of 65-64--129 while Jason Allred claimed the second and final spot with rounds of 71-63--134.

The field at the Columbus qualifier was much like a PGA Tour event and was split over two courses, Brookside G&CC and Lakes G&CC.  Darin Fisher, pro at Bos Landen GC in Pella, chose to play in Columbus in large part because there were so many qualifying spots because of the size and quality of the field.  Unfortunately Darin did not make it to the U.S. Open Championship after firing rounds of 75-76--151.  A 36-hole total of 140 would have gotten into a playoff for the final spot at Columbus.
