Gene Elliott of West Des
Moines is no stranger to USGA Championships. He has
qualified for 8 U.S. Mid-Amateurs and, after Monday, 6
U.S. Amateur Championships.
Elliott posted a
first round 68 at the U.S. Amateur qualifier at Spirit
Hollow GC in Burlington and followed that with a second
round 70 to finish at 6-under par 138 and claim the
medalist honors. Elliott, who started on #10 in his
first round, actually had it to 6-under before making
back-to-back bogeys on 6 and 7. He then got off to a
bit of a rocky start in round two, making bogey on two
of his first four holes but settled down with the help
of outstanding iron play. He made birdies on holes 5, 8
and 9, bogeyed the 10th and then made par on
the next seven holes. A birdie at the par-5 final hole
put an exclamation point on the round.
The second and
final spot was claimed by Jonathan Krick of Peoria
Heights, IL with a par on the third playoff hole over
Scot Glasford of Iowa City. Krick, who plays
collegiately at the University of Illinois, shot rounds
of 71-69 while Glasford fashioned two rounds of 70 to
tie at 4-under 140. Krick had to make a 6-foot par putt
on the first playoff hole and a 12-foot birdie putt on
the second playoff hole to extend it to the third.
Glasford’s tee shot found the tall fescue and he was
forced to take a lost ball. Krick’s was then able to
close out the playoff.
Glasford is the
1st Alternate and Jon Brown of Urbandale, who
made a tremendous charge with a second round 67, won a
playoff over Mike Oimoen of Clear Lake for the 2nd
Alternate position.
