Amateurs win Iowa Cup Matches

The Iowa Golf Association Amateur team defeated the Iowa Section PGA Professionals 22 points to 18 in the 45th Iowa Cup Matches. The amateur team took a one point lead after day one and won 11 ½ of the 20 available points during Thursday's singles play to earn the cup for fourth straight year.

The players once again had to deal with a delay at The Preserve at Rathbun Lake Golf Course, located at the Honey Creek State Resort near Moravia. Lightning strikes took players off the course after about an hour of play Thursday morning. Heavy rains delayed the start of the matches on Wednesday.

The amateur squad was led by Mike McCoy and Nate Dunn who each won all three possible points. Other top players included Josh Manske, Sam Elliott and Jim Curell who each captured 2½. Wakonda Club head pro Aaron Krueger had a perfect record for the PGA side while Curt Schnell earned 2½ points.

Iowa Cup Matches are a competition between Iowa’s top Amateur and Professional Golfers.  The Iowa Golf Association Amateur squad is looking to win the cup for the fourth straight year after a narrow victory last year at Ames Golf & CC. 

The Honorary Captians for the squads are Leroy Oxley (IGA) and Jeff Smith (Iowa PGA).  Oxley has served on the IGA Board of Directors since 2003 including serving as President in 2008 & 2009.  Oxley has served as the chairman of the Handicapping and Course Rating Committee since his time on the board.  Smith owns Harvest Pointe Golf Course in Oskaloosa and just completed a three year term as the District 8 Director for the PGA of America.  He served as Iowa PGA Section President in 2004 & 2005.

The Iowa Cup Matches began in 1968 at the “brand new” Des Moines Golf & Country Club.  At that time the format was much like a college or high school event. It was played at stroke play and each side had 12 players with the low eight scores counting.  They played 36 holes in a single day and Bob Leahy made a ten foot putt to capture the cup for the amateurs, 1,252 strokes to 1,253.    

The past few years have produced more close finishes, with the IGA winning by a single point in 2010 and two points last year.  Since 1994 the series can’t get much closer, with the two teams tied at eight wins apiece, one tie (2000) and one rainout (1999).  Unfortunately records are incomplete prior to 1994.

The current format has the teams playing Four-Ball Matches (1 Best Ball of 2 for 18 holes) on the morning of day one, with Foursomes play (alternate shot) on the afternoon of day one.  The morning of day two consists of Single Matches. All matches count for 1 point, with 40 points total.
