McCarty leads group of five to qualify at Davenport CC

Sean McCarty (R) with Davenport CC Head Pro John Panek. Panek shot 73 during qualifying.

Sean McCarty of Solon led a group of five players to advance through local qualifying for the 2012 U.S. Open on Monday at Davenport Country Club.  McCarty shot a two-under par 68 to claim medalist honors.   Also advancing to the sectional round are amateur Barrett Kelpin of Kalamazoo, MI, Pro Bill Hoefle of Marion, amateur Jon Olson of Ankeny and amateur Dillon Cooney of Coralville.

Kelpin, who plays for the University of Iowa, was the only other under par round after he posted a one-under 69.  Davenport CC played to a par 70 after officials played the 480 yard 12th hole, normally a par-5, as a par-4 for the qualifier.  Hoefle, Olson and Cooney each shot even par 70.

Josh Manske of Algona claimed 1st alternate honors after defeating Ryan Horner of Waukee in a playoff.  The two each shot a two-over 72 and Manske birdied the second playoff hole to defeat Horner.

While the field of 71 experienced near perfect weather the golf course, and the pressure of playing in a U.S. Open qualifier, made scoring difficult. The 1924 C.H. Alison design was firm, fast and had some lengthy rough, putting birdies at a premium.

The five will now move on to the sectional round where they will play 36 holes in a single day in mid-June, looking to secure a spot at Olympic Club and the 112th playing of our National Championship.
