Walahoski Captures Iowa Am

Johnston High School senior-to-be Jared Walahoski used back to back birdies on hole #11 and #12 today to take control of the 105th Iowa Amateur Championship.  Walahoski made only his second bogey on his final hole to fire a final round 71 and finish a 7-under par, good enough by three shots over Jon Brown and Ben Herrera.

Walahoski (17) is the youngest to win the Iowa Amateur since the format changed to stroke play in 1960.  He made par on his first seven holes, bogeyed the 8th and then made par on 9 and 10 before making birdie on three of the next five holes, giving him a stranglehold on the championship.  Pars on the 16th and 17th gave him a four shot lead heading into the 18th.  After piping his driver on the dangerous final hole, he played conservatively for his bogey and the three shot win.

Defending champion Brown fired a final round 73 and Herrera finished with 74 to tie for second at 4-under.  Nathan Leary of Waterloo, who will play golf for Iowa State this fall, fashioned a final round 69 to finish at 1-over 217 and alone in fourth.

Brown Looks to Continue Success at The Harvester

When the 105th edition of the Iowa Amateur Championship kicks off on July 23rd at The Harvester Golf Club you can be sure that virtually all contestants will be experiencing some anxiety as they play for the state’s biggest amateur championship.  But one golfer would seem to be right in his comfort zone.

Jon Brown of Urbandale (recent winner of his 3rd straight Des Moines City) broke through at Whispering Creek last year to win his first ever Iowa Amateur Championship after numerous close calls.

“My #1 goal in 2006 was to win the Iowa Amateur” Brown said.  “And I accomplished that goal”.

Brown was the runner-up in the 2004 Iowa Am and finished 3rd in 2005 before his win last year got the ‘monkey’ off his back.

Not only does he now have the title of Iowa Amateur champion to his name, Brown has experienced tremendous success at the host course, The Harvester Golf Club.  The IGA held the Iowa Match Play Championship at The Harvester in 2003 and 2004 and to say Brown did well would be a huge understatement.  His record in those matches?  An astounding 11 victories including the title in 2003 against only 1 defeat.  Although, it is hard to even call his loss a defeat.

In the 2004 Finals Brown squared off against Jeremy Lyons in what Iowa Golf Hall of Fame member George Turner called ‘the greatest match he’d ever seen’.  It was the kind of match where opponents were halving holes with birdies, not pars and seemingly getting up and down from nowhere to continue on.  The match finally ended on the 23rd hole when Lyons drained a 25-foot birdie putt and Brown narrowly missed his 15 footer to continue.

“I had a great run at The Harvester in ‘03 and ‘04” Brown said.  “While I don’t know if the course necessarily suits my game more than anyone else’s, it is one of my favorite tracks in Iowa and I have a lot of positive memories to draw from”.

And those positive thoughts should make Brown just a little more comfy when he tries to defend his first Iowa Amateur.
