John Nervig of Ames will be honored with the Iowa Golf Association's George Turner Distinguished Service Award on Friday, March 30th. The Turner award recognizes outstanding contributions to golf in Iowa by volunteers.
Nervig began his many years of volunteering and serving the game of golf in Iowa in 1961 when he was named chair of the Ames City Golf Championship. He continued to chair this event for 25 years. John also chaired the first Statewide Iowa Highway Commission Employees Tournament in 1963 and continued to run that tournament for 20 plus years.
John’s leadership and dedication through the Ames City Golf Championship and the Iowa Highway Commission Employees Tournament led him to co-chair the Iowa Masters in 1988 with George Turner. John continues to volunteer his time and effort to the Iowa Masters and has created a legacy tournament in Iowa.
John served on the IGA Board until 1998 and was president from 1985-1987. He served as Honorary Captain for the IGA team at the Iowa Cup Matches in 1998 and 2003. John commented on his years of service, “the friends I have made through these associations have more than paid me back for the hours I have given.” |
