Herman Sani was was the first director of the Iowa Golf Association and served the organization for over 30 years. He was a Hyperion member for over 50 years. During his tenure, he served for 15 years on the Board of Directors, was Chairman of the Greens Committee for 20 years and served as Club President in 1934.
In 1936 during the Great Depression, Mr. Sani purchased the Hyperion Field Club for back taxes on the courthouse steps and gave it back to the membership. No record exists that he was ever reimbursed for his generosity.
Because of his passion for the Club, golf and young people, the Herman Sani Invitational Golf Tournament was established in 1950 and has become one of the major championships on the Iowa Golf Association schedule.
Besides being a prestigious tournament, The Sani also helps raise money to fund scholarships to college-bound students. Since 1958, 150 students have been awarded Sani scholarships.

What can your club do to support the Herman Sani Scholarship?
As a donation to the Herman Sani Scholarship, many Clubs contribute $1 per entry from a designated tournament held at their Club. This is a great way for your Golf Club to “give something back to the game of golf”. We would like to encourage your Club to consider making this type of contribution to the Herman Sani Scholarship Fund. Contact the IGA office at 888-388-4442 for more information. |
