In 1939, John Jacobs began his illustrious amateur career by winning the Iowa Amateur just out of high school at only the age of 18. This would be the first of an amazing six titles at the Iowa Amateur. Jacobs won the next two Iowa Amateurs in 1940 and 1941 before the war interrupted his run. After his return Jacobs enrolled at Iowa and picked up right where he left off, winning the Big Ten Championship in 1946, the only Hawkeye to ever do so. That same summer Jacobs added his fourth State Amateur title. John added his last two State Amateur titles in 1948 and 1950. Besides his success in the State Amateur, Jacobs won four Northwest Amateur titles, and three Waterloo Open titles.
