The
2008 IGA Mid-Amateur Championship was the tournament
that didn't want to happen. After being postponed in May
and rescheduled for the end of September, the first
round was delayed again due to lingering foggy
conditions. After a two hour delay, players were glad to
begin play at The Tournament Club of Iowa.
Although the field size was reduced down to
approximately 100 players, the competition proved to be
strong. First round play concluded with a pair from
Council Bluffs sitting atop the leader board. David
Scott and former PGA Professional Bret Taylor
posted solid rounds of four and three under par
respectively to separate themselves from the field. The
final round, however, brought strong winds to an already
difficult course and caused many players to post higher
final round scores. One player who was making a charge
was Jon Brown who started out hot with four
birdies and no bogies on his first 10 holes. Finishing
with a final round 68 gave the highly decorated
Urbandale amateur a 3-under-par 139 and his first Mid-Am
crown. Finishing in tie for second were Brian Verduyn
of Clive and Terry Cook of Johnston after
both fired a two round total of 1-over 143. |
