| Veterans of USGA Championships will go for title at
Milwaukee CC
Gene Elliott of West Des Moines advanced to the 2008 United States Mid-Amateur Championship after shooting a 1-under par 70 at Veenker Memorial Golf Course in Ames on Monday. Ron Peterson defeated Rob Lynch for 1st Alternate position after each shot a 2-over par 73.
Veenker, which normally plays to a par of 72, played to a par 71 for this qualifier. The IGA played the 10th hole as a 470 yard par-4, normally the hole plays as a 483 yard par-5.
Elliott will be joined in the field by Mike McCoy, also of West Des Moines, who earned his spot thru sectional qualifying held at Tuckaway Country Club in Franklin, Wisconsin. McCoy finished with an even-par round of 72 to earn one of the five spots available.
Both golfers have come close to winning this national championship. McCoy was defeated in the semifinals in 2005 while Elliott made it to the quarterfinals the next year.
