Frank Schmidt of Waterloo competed at the U.S. Senior Amateur over the weekend at Shady Oaks Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas. Schmidt fired rounds of 80-76 to finish the 36-hole stroke play qualifying at +14 156. This left him in a tie for 92nd, three shots out of a playoff for the final spots in the match play draw. This was the second appearance for Schmidt at the U.S. Senior Amateur (2003).

Schmidt claimed the lone qualifying spot through the Iowa qualifier for the U.S. Senior Amateur Championship on Friday, August 29th after his 1-under 70 at Fort Dodge CC. It was good enough for a one-stroke victory over Jim Curell of Boone. Curell, and his even par 71, took the 1st alternate position while Jim Butler of Fort Madison was 2nd alternate after a 1-over 72.
