IGA Makes Minor Changes to Player of the Year Point System The Iowa Golf Association Board of Directors approved minor changes recommended by the IGA Rules and Competitions Committee to the annual Player of the Year races at their spring meeting March 6th. A change to the IGA Club Team Championship allowing women to participate was approved as well. A revised and updated list of National Amateur Events for earning points was approved. The new list includes all the events of the Golfweek/amateurgolf.com Player Rankings. It also includes an expanded list of collegiate events including the NCAA Regionals and Conference Championships at all levels. As in the past, points earned at these national amateur and college events count toward one of the three additional point events a player can use to make up his yearly total. You can view the new list and the updated point values at www.iowagolf.org. The point value for an amateur winning the Iowa Open was enhanced. An amateur that is the champion of the Iowa Open will receive 200 bonus points, giving him a total of 400 for the event. A player finishing as the low-amateur but not winning the entire event will continue to receive 200 points. All other point values for the Iowa Open will remain the same. At the fall board meeting the IGA decided to add women’s divisions to the Mid-Amateur and Match Play Championships. After further deliberation it was decided that the IGA will also open up the IGA Club Team Championship to women contestants. Each club will determine the make-up of their team with any combination of men and women members allowed on the four person team. Women contestants will play from a different set of tees and the USGA Handicap System™ provides the basis for the proper course handicap adjustment. The IGA has nearly 4,000 women members and the goal is to increase playing opportunities for these members. The events that earn points toward the Junior Player of the Year were revised to account for name changes and events that were discontinued. You can view the new list at www.iowagolf.org. Finally, the ending dates for determining the various points races were set. The final point event to count for the Player of the Year and the Senior POTY races will be the USGA Senior Amateur on October 7th, the final event to count for the Junior POTY will be the AJGA Woodward Video Junior at The Greenbriar on September 6th and the three members that will represent Iowa at the 2010 USGA State Team will be determined following the U.S. Amateur qualifier on August 9th.
